J-Y Wang

Dr. J-Y Wang is the Joseph and Corinne Schwartz Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He holds primary appointments in the Department of Surgery and secondary appointments in Pathology. Dr. Wang earned his MD from Sun Yat-Sen University School of Medicine (China) and PhD from Peking University School of Medicine, followed by postdoctoral training at Kyoto Pharmaceutical University (Japan) and University of Texas School of Medicine.

Dr. Wang's research focuses on RNA-binding proteins and noncoding RNAs in gut mucosal regeneration, particularly their roles in mRNA turnover, translation regulation, and epithelial barrier function. His lab employs

• transgenic animal models
• RNA sequencing
• ribosome profiling

to study stress responses, polyamine metabolism, and intestinal homeostasis in surgical disorders.

His recent publications (2016-2025) highlight

• mechanisms of vault RNA and circHIPK3 in epithelial barrier dysfunction
• interactions between HuR, CUGBP1, and miRNAs
• polyamine-dependent signaling in mucosal repair

with implications for surgical patients experiencing delayed healing and systemic inflammation.
