Wang J-Y is the Joseph and Corinne Schwartz Professor of Surgery and Vice Chair for Basic Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, with secondary appointments in Pathology. His work focuses on RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) and noncoding RNAs in gut mucosal regeneration, barrier function, and injury repair.
- MD: Sun Yat-Sen University School of Medicine, China
- PhD: Peking University School of Medicine, China
- Postdoctoral Training: Kyoto Pharmaceutical University, Japan; University of Texas Medical School
His research explores how RBPs like HuR and noncoding RNAs regulate mRNA stability and translation during intestinal epithelial renewal, repair, and stress responses, particularly in surgical contexts such as mucosal injury and systemic inflammation.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals trends in circular RNA function, microRNA degradation pathways, and polyamine-dependent mechanisms in gut homeostasis. He employs transgenic models, RNA sequencing, and functional assays to validate findings in human disease contexts.
- Joseph and Corinne Schwartz Endowed Professorship (2012)
- Senior Research Career Scientist, VA Biomedical Research Service (2011)
Dr. Wang has directed a continuously NIH- and VA-funded program for 28 years, serving on NIH study sections and journal editorial boards. His work bridges human surgical disorders with animal models to advance mucosal healing therapies.
