Dr. Andrea Loreto is a Research Fellow and Research Group Leader at the University of Sydney's School of Medical Sciences within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. He leads the Axon Degeneration Lab at the Charles Perkins Centre and co-leads the Biology program of ORCA (Optic Nerve Research Collaborative Australia). His research focuses on translational approaches to prevent axon degeneration in diseases like glaucoma and toxic neuropathies, leveraging human iPSC-derived neurons and advanced in vitro models.
Dr. Loreto earned his PhD from the University of Nottingham (2018) and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Cambridge and Oxford, supported by a prestigious Sir Henry Wellcome Fellowship (Wellcome Trust). He joined the University of Sydney in 2023 with a 2023 FMH Start-up Grant from the Faculty of Medicine and Health.
Research interests include axon degeneration mechanisms, neuroprotection through NAD+ signaling, Schwann cell-glial interactions, and optic nerve disorders. His work bridges basic science and clinical translation, aiming to identify therapeutic targets like NMNAT2 and SARM1.
