Dr Jeff Nanson serves as a Research Fellow in Biosecurity at Charles Sturt University's Gulbali Institute Centre for Biosecurity and holds an Honorary Research Fellow position at the University of Queensland. His structural biology expertise focuses on combating biosecurity threats through molecular-level investigations of pathogens and immune responses.
His educational foundation includes a 2015 PhD from Charles Sturt University under Professor Jade Forwood, where he determined 13 protein structures related to bacterial fatty acid synthesis as antibiotic targets. This work established industry collaborations for inhibitor development.
Nanson's research integrates structural biology with innate immunity to explore protein mechanisms in infectious diseases and neurodegeneration. He employs protein crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy to analyze Toll-like receptors, TIR domains, and SARM1 protein functions, with direct applications in antimicrobial resistance and drug discovery. His fingerprint reveals deep specialization in Interleukin-1 Receptor pathways, Higher-order Assembly, and NAD+ metabolism.
Analysis of his 2019-2022 publications shows a concentrated focus on structural mechanisms of immune signaling proteins and neurodegenerative pathways. Key themes include cyclic nucleotide signaling in immunity, SARM1's role in axon degeneration, and TIR domain assemblies - all contributing to therapeutic development against biosecurity threats.
