Dr Jeffrey Nanson is a Research Fellow in Biosecurity at Charles Sturt University's Gulbali Institute, specializing in structural biology and innate immunity. He holds a PhD from Charles Sturt University (2015) and has conducted postdoctoral research at The Australian National University and the University of Queensland. His work focuses on bacterial protein structures, enzyme inhibition, and immune signaling pathways, with contributions to understanding SARM1 activation in neurodegeneration and TLR signaling mechanisms. Dr Nanson is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Queensland and has collaborated with industry on antibiotic development.
Research Interests:
- Structural analysis of proteins involved in bacterial fatty acid synthesis
- Mechanisms of axon degeneration mediated by SARM1
- Role of TIR domain-containing proteins in immune signaling
- Development of vaccines and drugs against viral/plant pathogens threatening biosecurity
Awards:
- 2021 Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand Rising Star Award
Grants & Collaborations:
Industry collaborations during PhD for antibiotic inhibitor development, ongoing work on bacterial NADases and immune system pathways. Current research at Gulbali Institute focuses on biosecurity threats via structural biology approaches.
Labs/Teams:
Part of Prof Bostjan Kobe's lab (UQ) and now leading biosecurity-related projects at Gulbali Institute's Centre for Biosecurity.
