Professor Paul Witting is a Professor of Redox Biology in the Discipline of Pathology at The University of Sydney, within the School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health. His research laboratory is situated in the Charles Perkins Centre (level 4, west), providing an excellent environment for young researchers to be trained in biomedical techniques. Professor Witting is also a member of The Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation and the Charles Perkins Centre.
Professor Witting has established himself as a leading researcher in redox biology with a proven track record in biomedical chemistry, having published 129 peer-reviewed papers, 8 book chapters, and 16 review articles with 5,847 citations (excluding self-citations) and an H-index of 45. His research primarily focuses on exploring the relationship between oxidative stress and the evolution of tissue damage in acute conditions such as stroke, myocardial infarction, and vascular damage. He also collaborates with clinicians in the Concord Hospital Burns Unit to examine the relationship between severe burns, muscle myolysis, and acute renal failure.
His current research projects focus on micronutrients in health (particularly selenium) and the development of innovative therapeutics targeting inflammatory disorders of the bowel and heart. Professor Witting's work employs approaches including Animal Models, Cellular/Molecular techniques, and Spectroscopy across themes of Obesity, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease, Neurosciences and Mental Health, and Healthy Ageing. Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on serum amyloid A, nitroxide therapies, inflammatory bowel disease, and the role of oxidative stress in cardiovascular and neurological conditions.
Professor Witting has been recognized with several prestigious awards including the nationally competitive Heart Foundation Travel Fellowship (1999-2001), ARC Fellowship (2003-2007), and the Professor John Young Medal (2014) for his contributions to teaching, research, and administration within the Faculty of Medicine. He also served as Immediate Past President for the Society for Free Radical Research (Australasia).
In teaching, Professor Witting's portfolio includes USydMP (Block 8 and 9), Bachelor of Medical Science (2nd year), and Cell Pathology (3rd Year UoS co-ordinator; CPAT3202/3201/3901/3902) and the Surgical Pathology component of a Masters in Surgery. He currently supervises several research students including Milissa HUANG, Millard PHIPHATPHOL, and Cameron TROUGHT, who are working on projects related to inflammation models, hydrogen peroxide sources in microvascular endothelium, and novel anticoagulants for stroke therapy.
Professor Witting leads the Redox Biology laboratory which maintains active international collaborations, particularly with Professor A. Grant Mauk at The University of British Columbia in Canada for collaborative work on seleno-organic compounds as antioxidants, and with researchers at Otago University in Dunedin, New Zealand. His research group continues to explore innovative therapeutic approaches for inflammatory and cardiovascular conditions with numerous PhD and master's project opportunities available.
