Professor Stuart Cordwell is a Professor of Analytical Biochemistry at the University of Sydney, co-appointed in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences and the School of Medical Sciences. He is the Academic Director of Sydney Mass Spectrometry and a member of the Charles Perkins Centre. His research focuses on protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) in bacterial and cardiovascular diseases, with significant contributions to proteomics and bacterial pathogenesis. He has published over 140 papers, including foundational work on the 'proteome' term, and holds an h-index of 49. His awards include the Selby Research Award (2006) and the VELUX Professorship (2009).
Education: Graduated from the University of Sydney. Research Interests: Utilizing proteomics to study disease mechanisms, particularly bacterial pathogenesis (e.g., Campylobacter jejuni and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), PTMs in cardiovascular disease, and vaccine targets. Current projects include N-linked glycosylation in pathogens, membrane protein cross-linking, and redox PTMs in biological systems.
Recent articles highlight advancements in COPD microbiota modulation, Campylobacter acetylation, and ALS proteomics. He leads a research group with 6 PhD students and an Honours student, focusing on mass spectrometry methods and clinical pathology. Professional roles include Secretary-General of HUPO (2023-2025) and Past-President of the Australasian Proteomics Society.
