Dr. Marc Wösten serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases & Immunology at Utrecht University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. His research investigates how gut pathogens like Campylobacter jejuni and Salmonella dynamically reconfigure metabolic pathways to survive environmental stressors including nutrient fluctuations, oxygen changes, and antimicrobial exposure.
Core research emphases include:
- Phospholipid regulation of membrane protein virulence functions
- Lysophospholipids as potential novel virulence factors
- O-glycosylation mechanisms in flagellar assembly
- Metabolite-driven adaptations in energy metabolism and cell growth
- Interbacterial competition via secreted antimicrobial compounds
His laboratory integrates 13C-metabolomics, mass spectrometry, transcriptomics, and tissue culture models to dissect host-pathogen dynamics. Current work includes CSC-grant funded research on C. jejuni phospholipids mediating epithelial cell invasion. Dr. Wösten contributes to Veterinary Professional level 2 instruction and develops therapeutic strategies targeting bacterial adaptation pathways.
