معرفی
Jorge E. Galán is the Lucille P. Markey Professor of Microbial Pathogenesis and Professor of Cell Biology at the Yale School of Medicine. He holds a primary appointment in the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis and a secondary appointment in the Department of Cell Biology. He is affiliated with several interdisciplinary programs including the Yale Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS), Yale Cancer Center, and Cancer Immunology.
- Education: DVM, National University of La Plata (1980)
- Ph.D., Microbiology, Cornell University (1986)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Washington University in St. Louis (1990)
Dr. Galán’s research centers on the molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis, focusing on Salmonella enterica and Campylobacter jejuni. His laboratory investigates the type III secretion system (T3SS), a specialized bacterial organelle that injects effector proteins into host cells to manipulate cellular processes. His team also studies typhoid toxin, a key virulence factor in Salmonella typhi, and its role in causing neurological complications. His multidisciplinary approach integrates bacterial genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, and structural biology to define host-pathogen interactions at the molecular and atomic levels. His work has significant implications for vaccine development and novel antimicrobial strategies.
The most recent articles reflect a strong focus on typhoid toxin’s neuropathological effects, the structural architecture of T3SS, metabolic adaptations in Salmonella, and the interplay between host immune responses (e.g., LRRK2 and itaconate) and bacterial infection. These studies demonstrate a trend toward understanding both the structural basis of bacterial virulence and the host’s cellular defense mechanisms.

Dr. Galán has advised numerous students and postdoctoral fellows, including Dr. María Lara-Tejero, a close collaborator and co-investigator. He has secured significant research funding, including the NIH MERIT Award, which supports long-term, high-impact research. He serves on multiple scientific advisory boards and editorial boards, contributing to the broader scientific community. He is actively engaged in peer review for journals such as Cell Host & Microbe and grant panels including the NIH and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories.
He leads the Galán/Lara-Tejero Lab, located at the Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine, which is a hub for research on bacterial pathogenesis and host interactions. The lab collaborates extensively across Yale, particularly with experts in immunology, neuroscience, and structural biology, fostering a highly interdisciplinary research environment.
