Kelly Hallstrom is an Associate Professor in the Department of Life Sciences at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Her research focuses on the pathogenic mechanisms of Salmonella enterica, particularly the role of type-three secretion systems (T3SS) and pathogenicity islands in host infection, as well as biofilm formation in foodborne outbreaks. She teaches undergraduate courses in biology and contributes to academic outreach through educational activities.
- PhD in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology from UMass Chan Medical School
- BA in Biology from Clark University
Dr. Hallstrom's research investigates how Salmonella employs T3SS to invade host cells and manipulate immune responses. She also explores the role of Salmonella Pathogenicity Islands (SPIs) in bacterial virulence and the environmental factors influencing biofilm formation on food equipment. Her work aims to improve public health strategies against foodborne infections.
Her recent publications span 2011–2022, emphasizing Salmonella pathogenesis, host protein interactions, and microbiology education innovations. Notable topics include PERP protein regulation, biofilm persistence, and SPI gene functionality.
