Becky Bivens is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History at Sweet Briar College. She holds a B.A. in Studio Art from Agnes Scott College, an M.A. in Humanities from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her research focuses on modern and contemporary art, emphasizing abstract art, aesthetics, and gender studies. She has taught courses such as Women and Art, The Land as Art, and Art of Africa and the African Diaspora. Previously, she served as the Kirk Visiting Professor of Art History at Agnes Scott College.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes experiential learning, incorporating collections research and curation, and draws on her studio art background to encourage creativity. She integrates aesthetic theories from the Enlightenment to the present, blending humor with philosophical inquiry. Her work explores themes like the mind/body relationship, creativity, and modernity’s global impacts.
