Anna Chao Pai is a former professor and researcher at Montclair State University, where she spent nearly three decades in academic roles. A 1957 graduate of Sweet Briar College, she holds an M.A. in Embryology from Bryn Mawr College (1959) and a Ph.D. in Genetics from Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1964). Her career focused on genetics and developmental biology, culminating in academic publications including a genetics textbook and a science fiction novel addressing genetic themes. She is also the author of the autobiography From Manchurian Princess to the American Dream, which traces her family's history and her journey in American academia.
Dr. Pai’s early life was marked by her family’s migration from China and experiences as a Chinese-American student. Her time at Sweet Briar College significantly shaped her academic and personal identity, leading to her induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame for field hockey. She has endowed scholarships to support Asian students pursuing education at Sweet Briar, emphasizing the institution’s strengths in science and inclusive environment.
