Shawn O’Connor

Shawn O’Connor is an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts and Program Lead for Studio Art at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. He holds a B.F.A. in Ceramics and Sculpture from the University of Southern Maine (2005) and an M.F.A. in Ceramics from Syracuse University (2010). His research focuses on wood-firing techniques, kiln design, and utilitarian ceramics. Notable projects include constructing a train-style wood kiln at Syracuse University, which he later documented in The Log Book. O’Connor has held residencies at the Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and his work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Research Interests: O’Connor’s work explores the interplay between human craftsmanship and natural processes, particularly through wood-fired ceramics. He emphasizes utilitarian forms that reflect the passage of time and environmental interaction, drawing inspiration from river rocks, rusted metal, and autumn foliage. His kiln designs prioritize functionality and aesthetic innovation, blending traditional wood-firing methods with modern engineering.

Teaching and Advising: O’Connor teaches courses in Material Studies/3D Design, Ceramics techniques, and Observational Drawing. While no formal advisees are listed, his mentorship is reflected in his residency experiences and academic leadership.
