Basile Baudez is an Associate Professor of Art and Archaeology and the George H. and Mildred F. Whitfield Preceptor in the Humanities at Princeton University, serving as Director of Undergraduate Studies. His work bridges architectural history, textile studies, and urban politics. He holds a Ph.D. from École Pratique des Hautes Études (Paris) and an MA from École nationale des Chartes.
Research focuses on 18th-19th century European architecture, particularly textiles' role in urban spaces and state-society dynamics. Notable publications include Inessential Colors (2021), awarded the Alice Davis Hitchcock Medallion, and Textile in Architecture (2023). His current book project explores Venetian textiles as resistance against state encroachment.
Teaching interests include architectural draftsmanship, colonial architecture, and the history of artistic education. Grants include support from CASVA, CNRS, and the Getty Research Institute. He has curated exhibitions on architectural drawings and is affiliated with the Mellon Initiative in Architecture, Urbanism & the Humanities.
