Anna Bellavitis

Anna Bellavitis is a Full Professor of Modern History at the University of Rouen Normandy, specializing in Venetian and Italian history, gender studies, and social history. She holds an exceptional academic rank (2nd level) and serves as Deputy Director of the Normandy Humanities Doctoral School. Her research focuses on women's roles in Venetian society, family structures, and labor history.

• Education: Laurea in History (University of Bologna, 1987), Doctorate (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, 1996), Habilitation (University of Lyon 2, 2007).

Research interests include Venetian social history, gender agency in early modern Europe, and the intersection of law and economic well-being. Notable publications include Women’s work and rights in early modern urban Europe (2018) and Il lavoro delle donne nelle città dell’Europa moderna (2016, awarded the Gisa Giani Prize).

Awards: Recognized for contributions to gender history and Venetian studies, including the prestigious Gisa Giani Prize for her work on women’s labor in early modern Europe.

Leadership roles include directing major research projects (e.g., ANR DEFI on gender and agency in Venice) and editorial boards for journals like Archivio Veneto and Mélanges de l’École Française de Rome.

Supervised over a dozen PhD students, focusing on topics such as gender and legal history, urban labor practices, and family dynamics in pre-industrial Europe.
