Barry Spanier is the Director of Bands at the Newcomb Department of Music, Tulane University, within the School of Liberal Arts. He holds a Master of Arts in Arts Administration from NYU Gallatin (1994) and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Southern California (1980). His career is marked by leadership in building and revitalizing music programs globally, including orchestras, marching bands, and interdisciplinary festivals. Notable achievements include directing the historic 2,000-member Sydney 2000 Olympic Band and founding NYU’s Gallatin Arts Festival.
Spanier’s expertise spans conducting, music production, and artistic direction for major international events like the Olympics and World Expo 88. He has supervised university-wide musical events, jazz series, and community outreach programs, emphasizing collaboration across academic disciplines. His work combines performance excellence with educational innovation, fostering partnerships between music ensembles and diverse institutional stakeholders.
