Barbara Gibson is Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Toronto's Temerty Faculty of Medicine. She holds the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Foundation Chair in Childhood Disability Studies and directs the Critical Disability and Rehabilitation Studies (CDARS) unit.
Research employs critical and posthuman theories to examine socio-ethical dimensions of childhood disability. Work focuses on institutional practices affecting health outcomes and identity formation for disabled youth.
Key investigations challenge conventional concepts of disability/normalcy and quality of life metrics in rehabilitation contexts. Interdisciplinary approaches integrate sociology, bioethics, and critical disability studies to reframe healthcare practices.
