Dr. Bamdad Ayati is a Senior Research Fellow at the Sustainability Research Institute (SRI) of the University of East London. His research focuses on developing low-carbon building materials using renewable feedstocks and industrial by-products, with a particular emphasis on life cycle assessment and carbon sequestration strategies. His work includes innovations such as Sugarcrete™ (nominated for the 2023 Earthshot Prize) and waste sugarcane bio-composites, aiming to reduce embodied carbon in construction.
Education: PhD and Post-doctoral research focused on low-grade clay processing for pozzolanic materials, conducted in collaboration with industries like Tarmac and Augean PLC. Current projects involve paludiculture crops for natural insulation materials and consultancy-led resource management initiatives at SRI.
Research Themes: Sustainable bio-based materials, carbon-negative construction, circular economy applications, and microstructural characterization of cementitious systems. His work bridges materials engineering with environmental policy, emphasizing practical industrial integration.
Awards: Earthshot Prize 2023 nomination for Sugarcrete™. Active in interdisciplinary collaborations, including studies on microplastic pollution in the River Thames and waste-to-resource solutions for construction materials.
Advising/Grants: Leads SRI's Materials Resource Management division, directing consultancy projects and industrial partnerships. No listed advisees, but actively involved in collaborative R&D with industry stakeholders.
Labs/Teams: Core member of the Sustainability Research Institute, contributing to their mission of advancing sustainable construction and materials innovation through applied research.
