Dr. Muhammad Ali is an Associate Professor in Materials and Environmental Innovation at the University of Portsmouth, affiliated with the School of Civil Engineering & Surveying under the Faculty of Technology. He also holds affiliations with the Revolution Plastics Institute, Centre for Environmental and Renewable Energy Solutions, and Portsmouth Centre for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly focusing on affordable housing, waste management, and sustainable materials.
Ali earned his PhD from Cardiff School of Engineering and has prior experience as a Lecturer at Bridgend College of Technology and site Engineer in infrastructure projects. His research emphasizes sustainable construction materials using organic/inert waste, geo-environmental engineering for soil remediation, and circular economy strategies for waste derived products. He collaborates internationally with institutions in Ghana, Kuwait, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
His recent research trends include:
- Compressed earth composites reinforced with natural fibers (jute, sugarcane)
- Recycling construction/demolition waste into building blocks
- Compostable packaging degradation dynamics
- Plastic recycling innovations including interlocking blocks
- Biodegradable textile fibers from banana waste
Ali has secured grants including a £1.8M Innovate UK project (2023-2026) for low-carbon concrete blocks. He supervises PhD projects on waste-derived construction materials and vermiculture. His work has been featured in media including Radio New Zealand and BBC News.
Laboratory expertise includes finite element analysis, material characterization, and composting trials. Current projects explore trommel fines utilization, green supply chain management, and bio-plastic degradation mechanisms.
