Duncan Baker-Brown is a part-time Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton, affiliated with the School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering. He chairs the university's Industry Advisory Board for Architecture and serves as a Climate Literacy Champion, focusing on sustainable design and circular economy principles.
- Education: Master in Architecture (Royal Institute of British Architects), Bachelor of Science in Architecture (Polytechnic of North London).
- External Roles: Governance Board member for the UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, Co-Chair of RIBA Climate Action Expert Advisory Group, and member of Brighton & Hove City Council's Circular Economy Oversight Board.
His research explores the viability of waste materials in construction, closed-loop systems, and community-driven sustainable development. He advocates for resource mapping, co-design, and pedagogic live projects like the Brighton Waste House, Europe's first permanent waste-based building.
Recent publications analyze topics such as mycelium-based materials, low-carbon architecture, and urban material banking. He leads Interreg research programs on local waste processing for insulation and deconstruction/reconstruction practices.
As Principal Investigator, he coordinates projects like FCRBE (Facilitating Circulation of Reclaimed Building Elements) and SB&WRC (Sustainable Bio & Waste Resources for Construction), collaborating with institutions in Belgium, Europe, and beyond.
His teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, integrating live projects such as the Brighton Waste House (involving 360 students) and the International School of Re-Construction (funded by NWE Interreg FCRBE).
