Babak Javid, MB, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He is a physician-scientist specializing in infectious diseases, with a focus on tuberculosis (TB) mechanisms. His research addresses how mycobacteria adapt to hostile environments, the role of antibody-mediated immunity in TB, and molecular mechanisms enabling antibiotic survival. Javid holds degrees from the University of Cambridge (BA, 1995; MB BChir, 1997; PhD in Immunobiology, 2006) and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard Chan School of Public Health (2011).
His research spans antibiotic tolerance, translational fidelity in mycobacteria, and TB vaccine development. Key funding includes a Wellcome Trust Investigator Award (2017–2025) and NIH grants. He leads the Javid Lab, collaborating on novel antimicrobial strategies and TB diagnostics. Notable awards include election to the American Academy of Microbiology (2025) and the Young Immunologist of the Year (2003). Javid has mentored over 20 trainees, emphasizing diversity and innovation in science.
