He serves on the UCSF Chancellor's Cabinet and maintains active clinical and research roles in pulmonary and infectious diseases.
- M.D. from University of California, Irvine School of Medicine (1997)
- Internal Medicine Residency at Scripps Clinic & Research Foundation (2001)
- Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at University of California, San Francisco (2004)

His research focuses on tuberculosis treatment optimization, diagnostic development, and global implementation science. Current work emphasizes risk-stratified treatment regimens, biomarker validation (including CRP and host-response diagnostics), and community engagement in TB research. He leads multiple multinational clinical trials addressing drug-susceptible and drug-resistant tuberculosis, with particular focus on treatment duration optimization and comorbid conditions like HIV and diabetes.
Analysis of recent publications (2023-2025) reveals strong emphasis on pragmatic clinical trials, diagnostic accuracy studies across diverse global settings, and guideline development. Key trends include validation of shorter treatment regimens, implementation research for TB preventive therapy, and adaptation of point-of-care technologies from pandemic responses to TB diagnostics.
Nahid actively contributes to major clinical practice guidelines through ATS/CDC/ERS/IDSA collaborations and serves as principal investigator for NIH-funded trials including the TBTC Study 31/A5349 investigating rifapentine-based regimens. His work bridges laboratory science with real-world implementation through partnerships with the R2D2 TB Network and endTB Clinical Trial Team.
He directs research across multiple UCSF TB centers focusing on treatment monitoring, diagnostic development, and community-based implementation strategies. Current initiatives include the DRAMATIC trial for MDR-TB duration optimization and studies evaluating 3HP implementation for TB prevention among people living with HIV.
