Azzurra Ardovini is a Lecturer in Dance and Curriculum Lead (Performance) at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD). She holds a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance with First Class, an MA in Performance with Distinction, and an MA in Dance Teaching and Facilitating (due to completion in 2024). Her roles include teaching contemporary techniques, performance, and rehearsal direction across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Azzurra has extensive experience as a performer, choreographer, and educator, having worked with renowned companies like Vincent Dance Theatre, Phoenix Dance Theatre, and Akram Khan Company. She is committed to empowering students through reflective and embodied pedagogical practices.
Her research focuses on performance practice, pedagogy, and the intersection of motherhood with artistic careers. In 2021, she organized an Open Forum on 'Motherhood in the Arts.' Azzurra has also led professional development initiatives, including the Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) at NSCD and projects like For Only An Hour, a queer manifesto advocating LGBT+ visibility. Her career spans over 20 years across the UK, Europe, and Asia, with notable performances and commissions supported by Arts Council England and Yorkshire-based bodies.
Azzurra has received recognition for her leadership and artistic contributions, including the One Dance UK Mentoring Scheme Award. She balances her academic and performance work with advocacy for inclusivity, well-being, and strategic planning in the arts sector.
