Athina Dimopoulou is a Lecturer at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, specializing in Legal History with a focus on Ancient Greek, Roman, and Byzantine law. She holds a PhD from the University of Paris-II Panthéon-Assas (1997) and has conducted advanced studies in Legal Papyrology and Epigraphy at Sorbonne and Greek institutions. Currently, she serves in the University’s Directorate of International and Public Relations, leading NKUA’s participation as work package leader on mobility in the CIVIS European Universities Alliance. She is also Vice President of the Greek Society of Legal History and contributes to academic publications like the Revue Internationale des Droits de l’Antiquité (RIDA).
Her research explores legal frameworks of ancient and Byzantine societies, emphasizing socio-political dynamics such as political violence in Lesbos, water rights in Roman provinces, and the interplay between legal texts and everyday practices. Key interests include the evolution of legal systems, municipal governance, and the preservation of legal heritage through epigraphic and papyrological evidence. She actively trains law students for the International Roman Law Moot Court Competition and serves as a judge in these events.
Dr. Dimopoulou has received the prestigious 'Récompense attribuée aux meilleures thèses' (1997) for her doctoral work. Her publications span monographs on Roman law’s modern relevance, legal structures in Lesbos across eras, and Byzantine legal sources. She has lectured globally, including at Harvard, Oxford, and Bologna, and collaborates internationally on legal history projects.
