Roberta Mazza is an Associate Professor of Papyrology at the Department of Cultural Heritage, University of Bologna since July 2022. Previously, she held positions as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester (2009–2022), where she remains an Honorary Research Affiliate. Her research focuses on papyri editions, Roman and Byzantine Egypt, academic ethics in manuscript publishing, and the colonial history of papyrology. She actively addresses issues in the legal and illegal trade of ancient artifacts, contributing to an Impact Case Study rated 4* in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. Her book Stolen Fragments: Black Markets, Bad Faith, and the Illicit Trade in Ancient Artefacts (2024) explores these themes, published by Redwood Press/Stanford University Press.
Her work bridges classical studies with contemporary ethical and historical debates, emphasizing the colonial legacy of papyrology and the protection of cultural heritage. She teaches courses on papyrology, Roman history, and Graeco-Roman material culture, and maintains active engagement with academic ethics through institutional and public discourse.
