Arthur Verhoogt is a Professor of Papyrology and Greek at the University of Michigan's Department of Classical Studies. His affiliations include the Center for Middle Eastern & North African Studies (CMENAS), African Studies Center, and the Thurnau Professorship. He holds a M.A. (1990) and Ph.D. (1997) from Leiden University.
His research focuses on Greek papyrology, socio-economic history of Greek and Roman Egypt, Fayum village studies, and onomastics. Notable publications include studies of Ptolemaic administrative records, archaeological papyri from Berenike, and analyses of Egyptian military ostraca. His work bridges textual analysis with archaeological context, emphasizing documentary evidence's role in reconstructing ancient administrative and social systems.
Verhoogt has contributed to major projects like the Menches Papers archive and the Karanis granary studies. His recent work (post-2010) explores environmental interactions in the Nile Delta and the transition from Ptolemaic to Roman rule. He maintains the University of Michigan papyrus collection and engages in interdisciplinary studies of ancient legal and economic systems.
