Asbjørn Grønstad is a Professor of Visual Culture at the University of Bergen, affiliated with the Department of Information Science and Media Studies. He holds a PhD in American Studies (2003) and became a full professor in 2007. His research focuses on transgressive visuality, ethics in media, and the intersections of art, film, and cultural theory. Key projects include the Nomadikon research initiative (2008–2013) and co-founding the Ekphrasis: Nordic Journal of Visual Culture (2010). Grønstad has held visiting positions at institutions like the University of Wisconsin-Madison, UC Berkeley, and the University of Amsterdam. He has authored 12 books and over 60 scholarly articles, with recent works addressing neoliberalism, microdystopias, and the ethics of visibility. His teaching spans cinema studies, visual culture, and American Studies, emphasizing courses on media aesthetics and critical theory. Grønstad has received two Fulbright grants and actively contributes to public debates on media ethics and academic freedom.

He has examined filmmakers like Michael Haneke, Theo Angelopoulos, and Claire Denis, alongside artists such as John Akomfrah, to interrogate how visual forms mediate moral and ecological concerns.
