Dr. Arthur E. Appleton is an Adjunct Professor of International Law at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS-Europe) in Bologna, where he teaches International Trade Law. He also serves on the visiting faculty and Advisory Board of the World Trade Institute (University of Bern), and teaches Executive Education courses at the Graduate Institute of International Studies and Development in Geneva, Switzerland.
As a founding partner of Appleton Luff – International Lawyers, he has 30 years of experience advising international businesses, sovereign states, and organizations like the World Bank, WTO, ADB, UNCTAD, and the EU on trade litigation, policy, and arbitration. His work spans legal representation before the WTO Appellate Body, consultancy on trade remedies, and membership on the EU's List of Experts for Trade and Sustainable Development Disputes.
- Research Focus: International trade law, arbitration, customs compliance, and public international law.
- Academic Contributions: Published 4 books and ~45 articles; serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Legal Issues of Economic Integration and the Advisory Committee of The Latin American Journal of International Trade Law.
