Dr. Isabelle Van Damme serves as a Visiting Professor in the European Legal Studies Department at the College of Europe, Bruges Campus, specializing in EU trade law and policy. She is also a Professor of International Economic Law and Director of Studies at the World Trade Institute and the University of Bern, and of counsel at Van Bael & Bellis.
Her career spans academia and legal practice, with expertise in WTO law, EU law, and public international law. She has represented states and individuals before the CJEU, WTO panels, and the Appellate Body, focusing on disputes involving export quotas, technical barriers to trade, and the essential security exception.
- Education: Bachelor of Law and Master of Laws from the University of Ghent; LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center; Ph.D. in Law from the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Van Damme is a co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of International Trade Law and author of influential works on WTO appellate practices and anti-dumping agreements. She has held roles as a référendaire at the CJEU, taught at the University of Cambridge, and advised on Brexit-related legal and trade implications.
Her research centers on treaty interpretation, trade remedies, and the intersection of international and EU law. She is included in the European Union’s list of candidates for arbitration roles under trade agreements.
