Dr. Arman Sarvarian is a Reader in Public International Law and Fellow of the Institute for Sustainability at the University of Surrey. He holds an LL.B. from London, an LL.M. from the University of Cambridge, and a Ph.D. from University College London. His research focuses on codification of international law, dispute settlement mechanisms, and the procedural law of international courts, with recent work emphasizing climate change law and the Paris Agreement's implementation. He has served as principal supervisor for five completed Ph.D. theses and examines doctoral candidates. Notably, he represented Côte d’Ivoire before the International Court of Justice in 2024 and was awarded an international fellowship in the same year. Dr. Sarvarian is an external examiner at Durham University and the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and reviews for leading international law journals.
His research interests span a broad spectrum of public international law topics including international responsibility, sources of international law, the use of force, and territorial disputes. Current projects investigate the intersection of climate change law with international investment and human rights frameworks. He has contributed to landmark publications such as Commentary on General International Law in International Investment Law (2024) and authored The Law of State Succession: Principles and Practice (2025), which synthesizes state practice and codification efforts in this field. His work bridges theoretical scholarship with practical engagement in international legal processes.
