Ruth Mackenzie is a Reader in International Law at the University of Westminster Law School, teaching LL.M modules on Peaceful Settlement of International Disputes, International Environmental Law, and International Energy and Climate Change Law, alongside the LL.B module International Law and Global Justice. She represents the Law School on the College Research Ethics Committee for Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Her research expertise spans international environmental and natural resources law, law of the sea, and international courts/tribunals, with specialized focus on biodiversity, marine environmental protection, biotechnology governance, and climate change dispute settlement mechanisms. This interdisciplinary work bridges legal theory with practical policy applications.
Recent publications (2018-2023) emphasize environmental liability in global commons and deep seabed mining, application of environmental law in conflict zones, and judicial processes in international courts. Her scholarship consistently addresses evolving challenges in environmental governance and international adjudication, reflecting engagement with both theoretical frameworks and real-world case studies.
Mackenzie has supervised doctoral research on drug trafficking at sea, refugee law responsibility sharing, and Security Council decision-making. She secured grants from the European Commission (DOMAC project) and UK Department for International Development, and provided consultancy to UN Environment Programme and UN University Institute of Advanced Studies.
She actively contributes to the International Law at Westminster and Climate Change, Energy Policy and Sustainability research groups, co-edits Oxford University Press's International Courts and Tribunals monograph series, serves on the IUCN Commission on Environmental Law, and is a member of the AHRC Peer Review College (2022-2025).
