Esmé Shirlow is an Associate Professor at the ANU College of Law, specializing in public international law, international dispute settlement, and investment treaty arbitration. She holds dual appointments as General Editor of the Australian Year Book of International Law and Associate Editor of the ICSID Review and Kluwer Arbitration Blog. Her roles include Vice-President (Australia) of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law and Co-Chair of its International Economic Law Interest Group.
Shirlow’s education includes a PhD from King’s College London, an LL.M. (Hons) from the University of Cambridge, and degrees from ANU (LL.B., BA, GDLP). She is admitted as a solicitor in the Australian Capital Territory and advises on international law matters, particularly investment treaty claims and proceedings before the International Court of Justice.
Her research focuses on treaty interpretation, ISDS reform, and the role of international law in climate resilience. Notable publications include Judging at the Interface (Cambridge, 2021) and contributions to the VCLT in Investor-State Disputes (Kluwer, 2022). She has also led grants on topics like the rule of law in regulatory decisions and ASEAN cyber frameworks.
Shirlow teaches courses on international investment treaty law and arbitration, principles of international law, and public international law. Her work bridges academic rigor with practical impact, influencing policy debates on transparency, mediation, and treaty modernization.
