Professor Chester Brown is a Professor of International Law and International Arbitration at the University of Sydney Law School, serving as its Director of Global Engagement. He is also a barrister at 7 Wentworth Selborne Chambers and an Overseas Member of Essex Court Chambers, London. His expertise spans public international law, international dispute settlement, arbitration, investment law, and private international law. He has held academic positions globally, including visiting roles at Harvard Law School and Sciences Po, and maintains a practice as counsel, expert, and arbitrator in international proceedings.
Education: BA LLB (Melbourne), BCL (Oxford), PhD (Cambridge). Current roles include editorial work for the ICSID Review and advising on international legal matters.
Research focuses on international adjudication procedures, investment treaty law, and dispute resolution mechanisms. Notable publications include A Common Law of International Adjudication (OUP, 2007) and co-edited volumes on investment law evolution. Awards include the American Society of International Law’s Certificate of Merit and OGEMID’s 2011 Book Prize.
Recent scholarly focus includes virtual arbitration hearings, inconsistency in investor-state disputes, and the 'Asian Turn' in foreign investment frameworks. Supervises doctoral research on international law topics such as CISG interpretation and seabed authority powers.
