Ari Ofengenden is the Director of Hebrew Language Program and Senior Professor of Practice in the Department of Jewish Studies at Tulane University. He holds an M.A. in Cognitive Psychology from Tel-Aviv University and a Ph.D. in Hebrew and Comparative Literature from Haifa University, with postdoctoral research at Tübingen University and Monash University. His research focuses on Israeli culture, globalization’s impact on cultural identity, and comparative literature. He is the author of Liberalization and Culture in Contemporary Israel (2018) and Introduction to the Poetry of Abraham Shlonsky (2014), and has published articles on Israeli film, German-Jewish literature, and cross-cultural narratives.
Ofengenden’s work analyzes themes such as national identity in global contexts, the evolution of Hebrew literature, and the intersection of cultural institutions with language. His recent articles include explorations of Israeli cinema’s portrayal of subjectivity and critiques of capitalism in media. He serves as series editor for Purdue University Press’ Books in Comparative Cultural Studies and was chief editor of the Journal of Comparative Literature and Culture. He is an elected member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
His invited talks include presentations at Dongguk University, Shangani International Studies, Harvard Kennedy School, and Weill Medical College. His scholarship bridges cultural theory with empirical analysis of literary and cinematic texts, emphasizing how globalization reshapes national narratives.
