Vered Karti Shemtov serves as the Eva Chernov Lokey Senior Lecturer in Hebrew Language and Literature and Senior Lecturer in Comparative Literature at Stanford University. She directs the Taube Center for Jewish Studies and the Hebrew Project, and founded Dibur Literary Journal as Editor-in-Chief.
Her academic foundation includes a B.A. Magna Cum Laude in Comparative Literature from Tel Aviv University and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley (1999), advised by Chana Kronfeld, Robert Alter, and Daniel Boyarin.
Shemtov's research centers on Hebrew literature's spatial and temporal dimensions, examining dwelling concepts in poetry, prosodic innovation, and contemporary Israeli authors like Amos Oz and Yehuda Amichai. Her work bridges literary theory with Jewish studies, exploring how texts negotiate identity, conflict, and cultural memory through multilingual and spatial frameworks.
Recent publications (2018-2022) reveal a sustained focus on liminal temporalities ("limbotopia," "new present") and spatial politics, often co-authored with Elana Gomel. She analyzes narrative resistance to futurity in Israeli literature while documenting poetic evolution from early Hebrew revival to contemporary experimental forms.
Her honors include:
- Newhouse grant for curriculum development (2003-2020)
- Israel Institute Grant (2014, 2016)
- Stanford Art Grant (2015, 2019)
- President’s funds grant for Religious Understanding (2015)
- Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching (2006)
As an educator, Shemtov mentors graduate students through the Hebrew Literature Reading Group and develops pedagogical resources via Koret Foundation grants. Her grant portfolio demonstrates consistent support for Jewish studies infrastructure and Hebrew language pedagogy innovation.
She actively cultivates scholarly communities as Faculty Director of the Hebrew Literature Reading Group, Editor-in-Chief of Dibur Literary Journal, and member of PATH at Stanford, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue across Middle Eastern and Jewish studies.
