Ara Osterweil is an Associate Professor at McGill University's Faculty of Arts, serving as Director of the World Cinema Minor Program Stream. Her research focuses on postwar and contemporary cinema, avant-garde art, and experimental film, with particular attention to gender, sexuality, and political aesthetics. She holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric from UC Berkeley and teaches interdisciplinary courses blending art criticism and film theory.
Educated at NYU (B.A. English & Philosophy, summa cum laude; M.A. Cinema Studies), Osterweil's work bridges academic scholarship and creative practice. She writes regularly for Artforum and other publications, advocating for accessible critical writing. Her recent projects include The Pedophilic Imagination: A History of American Cinema (forthcoming) and the experimental memoir Between Her Body and the Stain.
Notable awards include the 2022 Kraszna Krausz Book Award and SSHRC grants. Her research emphasizes politically radical aesthetics, exploring how form interacts with social issues. She supervises graduate students in cinema studies, avant-garde art, and creative writing.
