C. W. Winter serves as the William Golding Junior Research Fellow in the Arts & Humanities at Brasenose College and as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Oxford. His work critically engages with intersections of visual and sonic arts across historical and contemporary contexts.
Winter's research centers on tactical misinterpretation in artistic practices, examining how marginalized techniques subvert dominant ideologies and avant-gardes. His scholarship spans narrative theory in experimental cinema, the politics of cinematic technique, and the historical deployment of 'poor' aesthetics in painting and music. Current projects include his book Underdetermined: The Art of Welcomed Misregard (2025) tracing strategic misreadings from the 19th century to present, and The Terrane-Image (2025) analyzing film narrative through Deleuzian frameworks.
His publication history reveals deep engagement with collaborative, cross-media practices. Recent works demonstrate consistent focus on rural landscapes as sites of cinematic innovation, experimental sound design, and the theoretical implications of long-take aesthetics. Winter frequently partners with artists like Anders Edström, producing hybrid film-publication projects that challenge disciplinary boundaries between documentary, ethnography, and avant-garde traditions.

Winter maintains active creative practice through film projects including Åra (in pre-production), set in the Stockholm Archipelago. His interviews in Cinema Scope (2020) and Filmstreet (2022) elaborate his methodology of 'abundance and repetition' in observational cinema. Digital footprints include theworksanddaysfilm.com and Projectr.tv screenings.
