Malcolm Turvey is the Sol Gittleman Professor in the Department of the History of Art & Architecture and Director of Film and Media Studies at Tufts University. He joined Tufts in 2015 to launch the Film & Media Studies Program, serving as its founding Director until 2021 and again from 2025. His academic background includes a PhD in Cinema Studies from New York University (2002), an MA in Film Studies from the University of Kent (1994), and a BA in Film Studies and English from the same institution (1992).
His research focuses on film theory, philosophy/aesthetics of film, avant-garde cinema, and modernism. Key works include Play Time: Jacques Tati and Comedic Modernism (2019), The Filming of Modern Life: European Avant-Garde Film of the 1920s (2011), and Doubting Vision: Film and the Revelationist Tradition (2008). He critiques classical film theory while exploring intersections with cognitive psychology and humanistic methodologies.
As editor of October since 2001 and board member of the Society for the Cognitive Study of the Moving Image, Turvey emphasizes rigorous interdisciplinary approaches. His recent work defends humanistic explanations in film studies while acknowledging scientific contributions, as seen in Film, Art, and the Limits of Science (2025).
Teaching includes courses like Global History of Cinema, History of Avant-Garde Film, and Film Theory. He has received accolades such as the Choice Outstanding Academic Title (2020) and the Kraszna-Krausz Moving Image Book (2012).
Professional activities include conference speaking, editorial roles, and contributions to journals like Projections. His research bridges philosophy, cognitive science, and film history, offering critical perspectives on cinema’s cultural and intellectual roles.
