Anton R. Chakhmouradian is a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Manitoba, part of the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. His research focuses on the petrogenesis, geodynamic significance, and economic potential of mantle-derived alkali- and carbonate-rich rocks such as carbonatites, kimberlites, and nephelinites. He holds a PhD from St. Petersburg State University (1996) and teaches courses including Introduction to Mineralogy, Optics and Spectroscopy of Minerals, Gemology, and Mantle-derived Rocks.
His research explores the sources and evolution of mantle-derived rocks, linking them to lithospheric evolution and mineral exploration for critical metals like neodymium and niobium. Current projects span Manitoba, British Columbia, Ontario, Russia, China, Morocco, and Tanzania. A secondary interest involves gemstones and historical use of marble and calc-silicates in art/architecture.
Recent publications emphasize mineral inclusions, phase zoning, and trace element analysis in carbonatites and kimberlites. His work integrates field studies, mineralogical characterization, and geochemical modeling to advance understanding of magmatic processes and critical metal distribution.
Teaching responsibilities include both undergraduate (GEOL 2500, 2800) and graduate courses (GEOL 7740, 7750), emphasizing hands-on analysis of geological materials. No grants or awards are explicitly listed, though his extensive publications reflect sustained research impact.
