Shannon Zurevinski

Dr. Shannon Zurevinski serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology at Lakehead University, where she also acts as Undergraduate Coordinator and is affiliated with the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining & Exploration. She joined Lakehead University in August 2013 after completing her Ph.D. at the University of Alberta.

Her research centers on mineralogical and petrological characterizations of rare earth element deposits within carbonatite systems, isotope geochemistry of carbonatites and kimberlites to decipher mantle sources, and mineralization processes in rare metal granites and pegmatites. This work bridges economic geology with fundamental igneous petrology to understand ore-forming mechanisms in alkaline igneous systems.

Analysis of her publication record (2004-2020) reveals consistent focus on carbonatite-kimberlite complexes and cratonic evolution, with recent emphasis on zircon geochronology and mantle-crust interactions. Her collaborative work frequently addresses Canadian Shield geology and rare metal deposit formation, demonstrating methodological expertise in isotope geochemistry and textural analysis of igneous rocks.

Advising:

• Supervised 18 graduate and undergraduate students on mineralogical studies of carbonatites, kimberlites, granites, and pegmatites across Ontario and Canada's North
• Research spans field mapping, geochemical analysis, and mineral characterization of rare metal deposits

She leads the Lakehead University Mineralogy Research Group and serves on the Board of Directors for the Northwestern Ontario Prospector’s Association (since 2014), actively connecting academic research with mineral exploration industry needs.
