Prof. dr. Antoine Buyse is full Professor of Human Rights and director of the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) at Utrecht University. His research examines the European Convention on Human Rights, rights of civil society, and 'shrinking civic space' globally.
Research Focus: ECHR jurisprudence, human rights defenders, rule of law from below, and protection mechanisms for civic organizations. He founded the ECHR Blog and developed a Massive Open Online Course on the ECHR.
Key Publications: 'Cultures, Citizenship and Human Rights' (2019) and extensive work on civic space restrictions. He chairs human rights commissions and advises governmental bodies on international legal frameworks.
