Dr. Alexandra Timmer is an Associate Professor in Human Rights Law at Utrecht University’s Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance. She specializes in equality and non-discrimination law within EU law, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), and international human rights treaties, with a particular focus on gender equality. She leads the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) and serves as Chair of Utrecht University’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Faculty Commission.

Research Interests
Her work explores the intersection of gender equality, anti-discrimination, and human rights law, particularly through the lens of stereotyping and vulnerability in ECHR jurisprudence. She investigates how legal frameworks can address systemic inequality and has contributed to EU policy via projects like FRAME (2013–2017) and ETHOS (Horizon2020).

Grants & Leadership
She led the FRAME project (EU FP-7) and received the NWO-Veni grant to analyze historical and contemporary challenges to gender equality in European human rights law.
Labs & Networks
Alexandra co-founded the Strasbourg Observers blog and contributes to the UU Institutions for Open Societies research program, particularly its Gender, Diversity, and Global Justice platform. She also collaborates with the European network of legal experts in gender equality.
