Janneke Gerards is a **Professor of European Fundamental Rights Law** at Utrecht University (part-time, one day/week) and a **State Councillor** at the Netherlands' Council of State. Her research focuses on constitutional law, fundamental rights (including EU law and the European Convention on Human Rights), judicial review, and the impact of technology on rights. Key areas include algorithmic discrimination, digital governance, and equality law.
**Education**: LL.M. from Maastricht University (1998), PhD in Constitutional Law (2002). Previously held professorships at Leiden University (2003–2011) and Radboud University (2011–2016). Elected to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in 2015.
**Research Projects**: Developed the FRAIA tool for fundamental rights impact assessments of algorithms, co-authored books on ECHR principles and EU fundamental rights, and led studies on platform economy and AI ethics. Recent work addresses pandemic-era judicial balancing and procedural review.
**Awards**: KNAW membership (2015), co-developer of a MOOC on human rights with over 50,000 participants (2016).
