Machiko Kanetake is an Associate Professor of Public International Law at Utrecht University and Director of the Master's Programme in Public International Law. She holds a Ph.D. from Kyoto University, an LLM from the London School of Economics, and an MA from the University of Sheffield. Her research focuses on intersections of security, human rights, and technology, particularly in the context of national and international law interactions. She has led projects on export controls, digital surveillance, and the engagement of domestic courts with UN human rights mechanisms. Currently, she is a Board member of the European Society of International Law (ESIL) and has served on the Editorial Board of the Leiden Journal of International Law.
Leadership roles include her membership on the Management Board of the Utrecht Centre for Regulation and Enforcement in Europe (RENFORCE) and coordination of initiatives like the Special Interest Group on 'Principles by Design' under Utrecht's 'Governing the Digital Society' focus area. She has also co-founded multidisciplinary projects on ethical and legal frameworks for technological innovation. Her educational leadership includes coordinating the Master's Programme in Public International Law and serving on Utrecht's Faculty Council.
Research interests span economic sanctions, dual-use export controls, domestic courts' engagement with UN human rights bodies, and regional human rights courts' interactions with UN mechanisms. She has contributed to empirical research on institutions for conflict resolution (ERI) and published widely on topics such as autonomous weapons systems, digital surveillance governance, and the legal implications of emerging technologies. Her 2018 article in the International and Comparative Law Quarterly earned the G.J. Wiarda Prize 2019.
Professional activities include jury service for the G.J. Wiarda Prize, participation in leadership development programs like the UU Westerdijk Programme, and editorial roles in journals such as the Security and Human Rights Journal. Kanetake’s work bridges theoretical and applied aspects of international law, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary legal challenges.
