Antje Scharfe

Antje Scharfe is a Professor of Sculpture and Ceramics at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. Her academic career includes a professorship from 1994 to 2007, during which she led the Department of Sculpture/Ceramics. She expanded the department’s offerings by hiring Azade Köker in 1997 and later splitting the department into independent units. Her research focuses on interdisciplinary projects, including the pan-European 'Food' and 'Communication' initiatives (1997–2000) and the intercontinental 'Space between' program (2001) involving studios in the US, Australia, and beyond. She has collaborated with institutions like Ohio University since 1998.

Education includes a diploma from Burg Giebichenstein (1979) and further studies at the Umprum Academy in Prague (1981). She maintained a freelance career since 1981, complemented by teaching roles at Burg Giebichenstein (1985–1986, 1990–1994) and the Academy of Arts (since 1990). Her international engagements as an artist/lecturer spanned Germany, Czechoslovakia, the US, South Korea, and Australia between 1989–2002.

Her exhibitions and events reflect her ongoing creative output, including recent participations in 'ZUKÜNFTE – Material und Design von Morgen' (2023–2025) and collaborations with theaters and museums. Though she retired from active university service in 2007, her legacy persists through institutional partnerships and exhibitions highlighting contemporary art and design practices.
