Anthony Sinai, PhD, is a Professor at the University of Kentucky in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics, College of Medicine. His research focuses on the biology of Toxoplasma gondii, particularly the chronic phase of infection and cell cycle regulation. Sinai collaborates with the UK College of Engineering and the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry to advance imaging technologies and enzymology studies. His lab actively participates in the UK Integrated Biomedical Sciences Program, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in parasitology and infectious disease research.
Research interests include the dynamic nature of bradyzoites (chronic phase parasites), ubiquitin-mediated signaling, and autophagy mechanisms in parasite survival. Sinai’s work challenges historical assumptions about ‘dormant’ parasites, revealing their metabolic activity and replicative capabilities. Collaborative efforts with Dr. Abhijit Patwardhan and Dr. Matthew Gentry integrate computational modeling and biochemical analysis to understand infection progression and drug targets.
Recent projects include studies on amylopectin turnover and deubiquitinase enzymes (e.g., TgOTUD3A) that regulate cell cycle plasticity. His lab’s findings have been supported by NIH grants, including a collaborative RO1 and pending R21 awards. Sinai’s contributions bridge microbiology, cell biology, and computational approaches to combat neglected parasitic diseases.
