Anthony S. Stein, M.D. is Professor in the Division of Leukemia, Department of Hematology & Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation at City of Hope National Medical Center, and Associate Director of the Gehr Family Center for Leukemia Research within the Hematologic Malignancies Research Institute. He has been on the City of Hope faculty since 1985 after completing medical school at the University of Cape Town (1978), residency at Montefiore Hospital, and a hematology/oncology fellowship at City of Hope.
Education
- 1978 – M.B., Ch.B., University of Cape Town Medical School, South Africa
- 1979 – Rotating Internship, Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town
- 1982-1985 – Residency in Internal Medicine, Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA
- 1985-1988 – Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology, City of Hope, Duarte, CA
Research Focus
Dr. Stein’s translational and clinical research centers on acute leukemias (AML and ALL), myelodysplastic syndromes, and hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. He is principal investigator on multiple phase I–III trials evaluating novel targeted agents (ivosidenib, enasidenib, venetoclax, blinatumomab, inotuzumab, and antibody-drug conjugates) and innovative transplant conditioning regimens (radio-immunotherapy, intensity-modulated TBI). His work integrates leukemia genomics, minimal residual disease monitoring, and immune microenvironment studies to optimize precision therapy and transplant outcomes.
Across 15 recent publications (2018-2023), his studies delineate molecular predictors of response to IDH1/2 inhibitors, define safer chemotherapy-backbone combinations with venetoclax, and establish blinatumomab efficacy in low-burden relapsed ALL. Additional investigations address COVID-19 management in immunocompromised hosts, donor-derived SARS-CoV-2 immunity post-transplant, and late toxicities such as sinusoidal obstruction syndrome.
