Dr Annie Irvine is a Lecturer in Social Policy and Public Management at the School for Business and Society, University of York. She holds a BA and PhD from the University of York and an MSc from the Open University. Her research examines mental health intersections with welfare systems and employment, focusing on policy effectiveness and structural barriers faced by individuals with mental distress. Current projects include an ESRC-funded study on welfare benefit claimants' mental health conceptualizations and a longitudinal study on work-welfare transitions. She collaborates with Better Connect to evaluate employability programs for marginalized groups.
Professional activities include editorial board roles for Qualitative Research and membership in the ESRC Peer Review College. Recent research outputs span 97 publications, including commissioned policy reports and peer-reviewed articles. Her work bridges critical social theory with actionable policy insights, emphasizing qualitative methods like conversation analysis.
