Robertson’s research bridges liturgical and secular music of the Middle Ages, examining their theological, political, and cultural implications. Key areas include French royal culture, the interplay of music with architecture at Reims Cathedral and St-Denis Abbey, and mystical theology in Guillaume de Machaut’s compositions. Her work analyzes symbolic motifs in polyphony, such as the Caput Masses and the Roman de Fauvel.
Recent publications focus on the intersection of folkloric traditions with sacred music, the role of local musical dialects in Philippe de Vitry’s work, and the liturgical and ceremonial context of St-Denis. She has also taught courses on fin-de-siècle French composers like Debussy and Ravel.
Selected Works include Guillaume de Machaut and Reims (2002, Haskins Medal) and The Service Books of Saint Denis (1991, John Nicholas Brown Prize). Notable articles include analyses of the Caput Masses (2006, H. Colin Slim Award) and medieval annunciation motifs (1995).
