Professor Anne Nurse holds dual roles as a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the College of Wooster. She has been affiliated with the institution since 1999. Her academic background includes a B.A. from UC Berkeley (1990), an M.A. from UC Davis (1993), and a Ph.D. from UC Davis (1999).
Her teaching focuses on criminology, quantitative research methods, statistics, data reproducibility, and introductory sociology. A hallmark of her career is her 16-year leadership of an 'Inside/Outside' classroom program partnering College of Wooster students with those at a local juvenile correctional facility. This model, pioneered at Temple University, fosters cross-community learning.
Her research emphasizes social inequality, as evidenced by her co-authored textbook Social Inequality: Forms, Causes, and Consequences (11th ed., 2022). She has also gained attention for her innovative use of robotic technology to continue prison education during the pandemic, profiled in Inside Higher Ed.
Professional service includes roles in academic governance as department chair and contributions to disciplinary associations. Her work bridges sociological theory with practical educational outreach, particularly in marginalized populations.
